Thornbury in Bloom
Some time in 1991 a Thornbury Town Councillor had a far sighted brainwave, Gill Dunkley thought that a Hanging Basket Scheme would help to brighten up the High Street. The then Town Clerk, George Jackson was responsible for costing the scheme and putting it before Council and on approval selling it to town centre businesses. Initially members paid a slightly subsidised price and the council provided a free hanging bracket, provided and hung the basket and carried out a watering service. Subsequently, once again on the initiative of Councillor Dunkley, a representative from Britain in Bloom South West was invited to address a public meeting to encourage the Town to enter the Britain in Bloom competition, further to this the Council voted to seek entry to the competition followed by the formation of a Thorn bury in Bloom Committee to co-ordinate the town's entry. That's how it all started and the rest as the saying goes is history. We are still here and it is fair to say that we will be here for some time yet.
Since 1991 we have regularly entered the competition and we all enjoy the wonderful displays, of hanging baskets and containers that decorate the Town centre during the summer months. We are exceptionally fortunate in having many green fingered experts who kindly give their time and advice in supporting the aim of enhancing the appearance of the town and making it a place to enjoy and live in. Our experts include Jean Owen (J&T Owen Florists) Sue Aitken and Tony Sansum from Thornbury Garden Shop and Craig Maude from Tytherington Road Nurseries and all supply hanging baskets and other floral decorations throughout the town.
Make the most of it this year, look around you, admire the baskets on the poles in the High Street, spot the salmon putchers filled with flowering plants, have a really close look at the Town Pump it is a great combination of iron work and floral decoration. Be wise: use your eyes.
